The Irish Impact Podcast – Episode 31 – Recapping the 2013 Irish Season

From all of us here at Irish Impact and SPNT we hope that all of you have a great holiday season. It’s been a few weeks since we last got an episode out to you. Christmas, New Years and a trip to Las Vegas kind of got in our way but now that we’ve had a chance to digest it all, we’re back for one more episode for the 2013 season. I want to thank all of you for downloading the show each week and being so supportive of our show. Irish faithful are the best and we love hearing your feedback win or lose! Now on to this week’s show…

In this week’s show:

We briefly look back at the Rutgers game.

We discuss the season that Tommy Rees had.

The coaching carousel and Brian Kelly calling the offensive plays for the Irish in 2014.

The loss of players, particularly the early entrants who are leaving the Irish.

The Irish Impact Podcast – Episode 30 – The Pinstripe Bowl

Well the game didn’t go as we’d hoped out on the farm. Despite the loss to Stanford, the Fighting Irish received a bid to play in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium in New York on Decmeber 28th. It’s amazing in one year to go from playing for the National Championship, to playing in a stadium not even built for football. We hope everyone has a great holiday and we’ll speak again sometime in 2014! Stay safe and GO IRISH!!!!

In this week’s show:

We briefly look back at the Stanford game.

What a crazy two weeks of football it’s been in college football.

The coaching carousel and how it might effect Notre Dame.

We talk about our favorite Christmas movies.

The Irish Impact Podcast – Episode 29 – Bend But Don’t Break

Congrats to all the seniors who played their final game at Notre Dame Stadium on Saturday. Though the game itself wasn’t beautiful it was great to see the snowflakes falling in South Bend. Brought back some great memories! Now the Irish are headed out to the West Coast to take on a Stanford team ranked in the Top 10 and the Irish are looking to end a 2 game losing streak on the farm.

In this week’s show:

We looked back at the game vs BYU

The running game got going with McDaniel and Folston despite a shakeup on the offensive line.

Though he had one interception, Tommy Rees final home game was solid.

We look ahead to this week’s game against Stanford.

Bold Predictions and Score Predictions.

There are lots of rivalry games this weekend, but living in Ohio, particularly Northwest Ohio, this time of year can be rough.

Happy Thanksgiving from everyone at SPNT and Irish Impact!

The Irish Impact Podcast – Episode 28 – Ugh

Lots of blame to go around for the Irish’s loss in Pittsburgh. The QB play, the playcalling, the officiating, the ejection. Every which you look at it, it wasn’t the Irish’s best night. Turning the ball over 3 times and not forcing any turnovers on defense is just asking for trouble. With the loss, the BCS hopes of the Irish have been eliminated. Next up though is a tough task in BYU. One of the most dynamic offenses in the country will head to South Bend on Saturday for Senior Day.

In this week’s show:

We looked back at the game vs Pitt

The targeting and ejection. Was it the right call?

Where did the running game go?

Turnovers will haunt.

Should Notre Dame install FieldTurf at Notre Dame Stadium?

We look ahead to this week’s game against BYU.

The Irish Impact Podcast – Episode 27 – A Win is a Win

Well, it wasn’t the ugliest game we’ve ever seen, it also wasn’t the prettiest game either. Neither defense played particularly well. The Irish had two interceptions that allowed Navy to stay in the game. There were only two punts in the game, both by Navy. With that said, the Irish defense stepped up when it needed to most in the 4th quarter to pull up the 4 point win against the Midshipmen. Next up? The Irish head to the Steel City to take on the Pitt Panthers. Lots of great memories for the Irish at Heinz Field, lets hope it continues!

The Irish Impact Podcast – Episode 26 – The Over Usage of the Word Misnomer

We didn’t get the 50 burger that some of us on this show were expecting but the Irish were imposed their will on the Falcons over the weekend in the altitude of Colorado Springs. Tommy Rees played extremely well throwing 5 TD passes in a 45-10 route of Air Force. Up next, the Midshipmen come to South Bend looking to avenge their blowout loss in Ireland a year ago.

Thanks to everyone who nominated our show for the Podcast Awards! Unfortunately Irish Impact didn’t make the finals. There’s always next year!

In this week’s show:

We looked back at the game vs Air Force.

Tommy Rees was on fire, completing 17 of 22 passes and 5 touchdown passes.

We’re still wondering what’s going on with Amir Carlisle.

The Irish Impact Podcast – Episode 25 – Bring on the Academies

Well, that was ugly. The Irish finally end USC’s winning streak in Notre Dame Stadium in breath taking fashion as we watched two offenses do their best to not score points. Irish quarterback Tommy Rees went down with an injury and the Irish offense went right with him. Luckily the Irish defense, coupled with USC’s inability to make chip shot field goals allowed Notre Dame to escape with a 14-10 win over the Trojans.

Thanks to everyone who nominated our show for the Podcast Awards! Stay tuned to see if Irish Impact makes it to the finals!

In this week’s show:

We welcome Patrick back this week as we take a look back at the win against USC.

How thankful are we now for Tommy Rees?

Cam McDaniel’s day against USC and why is Amir Carlisle struggling?

We got an email from Sean in Kansas. We like Sean and he emails us every week, but guess what? You can too! Email us at feedback@irishimpact.com. We also take a look at a cool article about a die-hard fan from Tiffin, OH who has only missed 1 Notre Dame home game since 1941.

The Irish Impact Podcast – Episode 24 – They Couldn’t Wait to Fire Kiffin?

2001. The last time a Notre Dame team has beaten USC, at Notre Dame Stadium. 12 years ago. Since that win, Notre Dame has hired 4 head coaches and lost to Navy three times. The good news? The Irish have won 2 out of the last 3 against our heated rivals who come in staggered after Lane Kiffin was fired a few weeks ago. Throw out the records folks, this game is always a dandy, and it will kickoff under the lights Saturday night in South Bend!

Thanks to everyone who nominated our show for the Podcast Awards! Stay tuned to see if Irish Impact makes it to the finals!

The Irish Impact Podcast – Episode 23 – Turnovers Will Haunt

Revenge is a dish best served with turnovers. Tommy Rees had two turnovers inside the first 70 seconds of the game. The Irish quickly found themselves trailing 14-0. Despite the quick deficit, the Irish battled, and kept it close. Ultimately the defense spent too much time on the field as Oklahoma pulled away late. Now the Irish travel to Dallas to take on a very potent Arizona State offense averaging over 40 points per game and just thumped USC 62-41.

The Irish Impact Podcast – Episode 22 – Here Come the Sooners

Boy was that ugly! Tommy Rees was trying to become the first quarterback in Notre Dame history to pass for 300 yards in 4 consecutive games to start a season. Well, that didn’t happen on Saturday. Kudos to the Michigan State defense. They did a great job mauling our receivers at the line of scrimmage, took the tight ends out of the passing game all together and well our ground game is still trying to find its identity. Still, this Notre Dame team finds itself 3-1, ranked in the Top 25 with a date looming with the Oklahoma Sooners who will head into South Bend with revenge on their minds.

The Irish Impact Podcast – Episode 21 – Wake Up the Offense

3 points at halftime Saturday night in West Lafayette, IN. Purdue was looking like a team ready for the upset. They were able to move the ball against the Irish on the opening drive but the game was only 10-3 at halftime. Whatever happened in the Notre Dame locker room at halftime worked because the Irish aired it out, this time going to deep. Tommy Rees became the 2nd Irish quarterback to open the season with 3 straight 300 yard passing days, joining the one and only Jimmy Clausen. Next Up? Sparty.

In this week’s show:

Last week we asked where has the defense gone? This week it was the offense that needed a spark.

Tommy Rees played much better in the 2nd half.

The running game seems to be missing something.

We got an email from Sean in Kansas who is nervous about our defense.

Sparty is 3-0 with wins over cake teams, and somehow have the #1 ranked defense in the country.

The Irish Impact Podcast – Episode 20 – Make it Four Boilermakers

Ah yes, a reference to one of my favorite movies all time, Dumb and Dumber. Cam Neely as Seabass. Does it get any better than that? I thought about naming this episode Agt. Simon Donovan is Alive. But, that was a very very obscure West Wing reference, and I also didn’t want to spoil anything, well, there goes that. Plus, I wanted to move on after that dreadful defensive performance onto much more brighter things. Playing the Boilermakers may just be the best cure for this defense.

In this week’s show:

Where has the defense gone?

Last Week: Tommy Rees, Heisman candidate. This Week: Guess Who’s Back? Back Again? Turnover Tommy.

The Irish Impact Podcast – Episode 19 – Michigan Week

After a long offseason, the Irish came out on fire Saturday at Notre Dame Stadium scoring 14 points on 6 plays. The final score 28-6 may not have been indicative of the game itself though. Missed opportunities on special teams by both teams certainly didn’t help. The good news is game 1 is in the books and now Irish fans across the world can look ahead to one of the biggest weeks on the schedule. Michigan Week.

The Irish were clearly outclassed, outperformed, outhustled, everything that could go wrong, did. It just wasn’t our day as Irish fans. The Irish Impact Podcast – Episode 16 – BCS Title Game Preview

Well it’s been a month since we last recorded the podcast. Notre Dame STILL hasn’t played their bowl game. Can Monday get here any quicker? It feels like forever ago that Notre Dame wrapped up their 12-0 regular season at USC. Monday night, the Irish will take on the champs of the SEC the Crimson Tide of Alabama. The Irish who are ranked higher and have one less loss than Bama surprisingly are 10 point underdogs in this game. I remember the last time that Notre Dame were double digit dogs, against Oklahoma. Remember what happened? Brian Kelly is looking to add his name to Notre Dame lore as another head coach who won a National Championship in his third season like the many Irish greats before him. We now know the opponent. The Irish now have a chance to knock off the defending champion Alabama Crimson Tide. Two programs with deep history, legendary coaches, players and more. Nick Saban has made it to this game now 4 times, 3 with Bama. Brian Kelly has guided only one team to a BCS bowl and didn’t even coach in the game. Either way, it should be a great game, one for the ages! The Irish Impact Podcast – Episode 14 – Goin to Miami

12-0. How does it feel IRISHNATION!?! With a 22-13 win over the Trojans, the Irish sealed their trip to Miami January 7th. There they will most likely play the winner of the SEC Championship game between Alabama and Georgia who are both ranked 2nd and 3rd respectively in the BCS standings. How many of you thought at the beginning of the year that the Irish would find themselves 12-0? I know we didn’t. Lots and lots to be thankful for, like Brian Kelly coming to Notre Dame three years ago. Like Manti Te’o staying for his senior season. The Irish Impact Podcast – Episode 13 – On the Doorstep

With a 38-0 win over Wake Forest on Senior Day, coupled with losses by Kansas State and Oregon, Notre Dame finds itself at the peak of the college football landscape. Feels like forever ago since we’ve been able to utter that phrase. 19 long years folks. 1993 was the last time that the #1 sign above Grace Hall was lit up for football. Hard to believe that the College Football Hall of Fame, located in South Bend, has never hoisted the Notre Dame helmet into the #1 ranking. The building opened in 1995. Count ’em, 19 years. I was in 7th grade the last time Notre Dame was #1. How about being the first team in NCAA/BCS history to be #1 in the BCS rankings and #1 in graduation rates. So I guess you can win at Notre Dame and graduate your players after all. The Irish are on the doorstep, inching one step closer to becoming Notre Dame legends.

The Irish Impact Podcast – Episode 12 – Take Away the C from BCS and You Get?

I understand that the most important thing is to “Just Win Baby”, but that win Saturday night vs Boston College? Insert Homer Simpson sound byte “BOOOOOOOOORING”. Look I’m the biggest Irish homer there is but c’mon a 21-6 win over Boston freakin College isn’t going to help your National Title chances. I understand that K-State and Oregon haven’t played nearly the schedule that the Irish have, I get that. But when the human element is 2/3 of the process, at some point you need to put on a show, dazzle some folks. This weekend, Senior Day, may be the Irish’s last chance to be “impressive”. Let’s hope they don’t squeak another win out at home.

In this week’s show:

The Irish won a ho hum ballgame

Defense held BC to no touchdowns

The offense wasn’t great but it wasn’t bad.

The new helmet rule in the NCAA is keeping Tommy Rees around

A win is a win but they needed to beat down BC, this wasn’t a beat down and the BCS is a joke.

Shoutouts/Announcements

The Irish Impact Podcast – Episode 11 – Holy Pitt

The Luck of the Irish. That’s what it boils down to. The Irish got a break on an iffy pass interference call, a missed double jersey number call if that’s what you want to call it. Either way, the Irish squeak one out versus the Pittsburgh Panthers. Whew. 9-0. It sure was ugly. But in the words of the late Al Davis, “Just Win Baby”. That’s exactly what the Irish continue to do here in 2012. How many of you thought THAT was possible this year? Be honest! This has been one of the more memorable Irish seasons in quite some time.

In this week’s show:

The Irish looked sluggish on defense

Golson vs Rees becomes clearer

Brindza missed two crucial kicks

Pitt’s offense was able to move the ball for 3 quarters

The Irish Impact Podcast – Episode 10 – Irish Dominate the Thooners

Another week, another Irish victory, this time at the hands of the Sooners in Norman, OK Saturday night. It wasn’t just a win, it was an impressive win. It was a dominant win, it was a “is this really happening” win. Though the tell tale signs came early on the Sooners first drive when the center snapped the ball with no one behind him stalling what looked to a promising drive. This Irish team has been the most fun to watch for me personally in a long long time. I was only 7 during the 88 championship and frankly don’t remember much of it. Now I’m getting to see the Irish have a legit chance at a National Championship. First thing’s first, BEAT PITT.

In this week’s show:

Cierre Wood’s beautiful 62 yard TD run

Golson wasn’t great, but managed the game. Didn’t turn the ball over which was important

The holding call at the end of the 2nd half proved to be huge.

Another missed kick by Brindza, though he made up for it later, nice bounce back

Bell-dozer ends the Irish streak

Te’o Heisman Moment (sidenote, Nick knows its Dan Fox, where he got Dan Wolf? We don’t know.)

Shoutouts/Announcements

Irish now ranked 3rd in the current BCS standings with Florida’s loss and Oregon beating NOBODY

Can’t worry about that, MUST BEAT PITT, remember 14-7?

The Irish Impact Podcast – Episode 09 – Irish Avoid the Trap

The proverbial trap game. The game sandwiched in between an emotional hard fought win (Stanford), and an opponent that is a major stumbling block to your National Championship dreams (Oklahoma). BYU, fresh off a thumping at home against Oregon State came into South Bend and put up a dogfight. In fact, they dominated the game. The Irish minus their starting QB Everett Golson, went with Tommy Rees who at times looked great, and others merely OK. That’s not good enough though and certainly won’t be in Norman, OK this weekend as the Irish head to prairie to take on the Sooners. We will know late on Saturday whether or not this team is a team of destiny.

In this week’s show:

Closer than the experts think

BYU ties the game at 7 on a great pass play ending the streak of games without allowing a TD.

The TD pass that wasn’t giving BYU the lead

Missed field goals cropped up for the Irish almost costing them a victory

In the end the running game saved the day

Shoutouts/Announcements

Irish still ranked 5th in the current BCS standings.

Oklahoma is no joke. The Irish secondary will be tested.

The Irish Impact Podcast – Episode 08 – Not In Our House

It has been a long time coming. The Irish are now 6-0 on the year. Kevin didn’t think it was possible, neither did Seubs. Neither did a lot of people. No one thought the defense would be THIS good. Staring at a 1st and goal from the one yard line, the Notre Dame defense stopped the powerful Stanford Cardinal. Matched them punch for punch and with the knockout blow on 4th and goal, the Irish protected their house. Bring on Cougar Town.

In this week’s show:

What a performance by the defense

Take your pick: Rees or Golson?

The 4th down controversial call. Was it a TD?

Shoutouts/Announcements

Irish ranked 5th in the current BCS standings.

BYU comes to town

The Irish Impact Podcast – Episode 07 – Bring on the Cardinal

5-0. Haven’t given up a touchdown since Purdue on Sept 8th. Haven’t given up a rushing TD since 2011. Haven’t trailed in a single minute of 2012. Who are THESE Irish? Over 300 yards rushing against The U? I know it’s not same Miami squad as those vaunted teams from the early 2000’s but still. What a year the Irish have had so far, here’s to hoping it continues this weekend in South Bend as the Irish host the Stanford Cardinal.

In this week’s show:

Kevin’s experience at The Shamrock Series in Chicago

The Irish rack up crazy offensive numbers on the ground

Rees gets the start but this time Golson saves the day for the Irish

Defense wins championships.

We’re joined by Brian Hamilton of the Chicago Tribune to breakdown the Miami game and look ahead to the rest of 2012.

Notre Dame’s realistic chances at a BCS berth.

The Irish Impact Podcast – Episode 06 – Irish Drop Michigan….Literally

How about them Fighting Irish? 4-0 for the first time in 10 years, heading into the bye week with a chance to build upon their early season momentum. What’s more surprising? How about this defense? With the loss of key starters before and during the seasons, the Irish secondary has been playing way above expectations.

In this week’s show:

Denard hands the Irish a win.

The defensive front played superb.

Rees saves the day for the Irish offense.

Are the Irish ranked too high?

Shoutouts/Announcements

Notre Dame decides to opt out of their contract for the Michigan series with the final game coming in 2014. We’re joined this week by Ryan Ritter a.k.a. NDTex on Twitter from HerLoyalSons.com

The Irish Impact Podcast – Episode 05 – Defense Crashes the Sparty Party

Who is this Irish team? 3-0 to start the year? The defense has given up just 30 points in its first 3 games. It is the lowest point total that Irish have allowed in its first three games of the season since their last National Championship team allowed 27 in 1988. Michigan State NEVER reached the Red Zone Saturday night and only had one possession inside Irish territory in the 2nd half. Nice work defense!

In this week’s show:

The Irish put the beatdown on Sparty

Eiferts consecutive games with a catch streak snapped

Golson wasn’t great but didn’t need to be either

Ben Turk’s punting was pivotal in the field position battle

Manti Te’o had a performance like no other when you consider the off field heartache he had been feeling

Shoutouts/Announcements

The Irish and the ACC deal

We look ahead to Michigan, stop SHOELACE PLEASE!

The Irish Impact Podcast – Episode 04 – “Rees”ons to Believe

If you had Tommy Rees coming into the game for the final drive for the Fighting Irish to lead them to victory, you’re lying. Despite the loud boos pouring over him at Notre Dame Stadium, Rees pulled through and led the Irish to a 20-17 win over the Boilermakers.

In this week’s show:

The Irish struggled to run the football vs Purdue

Offensive Line was not at its best, Eifert’s injury meant others needed to step up

Golson was pulled late in the game, what message does this send?

Shoutouts/Announcements

Look ahead to Sparty in East Lansing Saturday night

Michigan State has beaten a decent opponent in Boise St but mopped up Central Michigan last week

The Irish Impact Podcast – Episode 03 – Onward to Victory

Notre Dame is victorious over the weekend vs Navy in a game that featured some great plays, great defense and efficient offense. Everett Golson made his Irish debut and despite his interception in the red zone (rookie mistake) he managed the game quite well.

In this week’s show:

We look back at this weekend’s Emerald Isle Classic

The lines on both sides of the ball were key to the Irish dominance.

Notre Dame managed to hold Navy to just 150 yards rushing after giving up just 196 last year and 367 in 2010.

Tyler Eifert is the Irish’s biggest red zone threat

Shoutouts

Look ahead to Purdue this weekend in South Bend
