Today marks the 10 year anniversary of something very special to me. It was exactly 10 years ago my college radio buddies and I hosted our final show together called, On-the-Line. We called it Northwest Ohio’s #1 call in talk show, except no one called in. Despite the lack of phone calls and audience interaction, 88.1 FM WBGU on the campus of Bowling Green State University was the birthplace of my passion, podcasting. It was at BGSU where I joined the Bowling Green Radio Sports Organization and got on the air as a freshmen. It was where I learned microphone techniques and how to edit audio. Pretty much all the skills I use in my podcasting today. It was a place I met some of the best people in the world and I’m forever grateful they helped me find my path 10 years ago.
So feel free to take a listen to what we called the “Invitation Only OTL”. It’s funny going back and listening to this audio and picking out each voice. I’m not sure if we sound 10 years younger, or if the equipment is that much better. It was in fact a legit radio station and not the home studio you may be used to hearing me from. About halfway through the audio you’ll notice some missing parts of the show. That’s because back then the only way to record our shows was by using a small boombox in the studio where we literally had to flip the cassette over to keep recording. My guess is that they no longer use that method at WBGU. Nowadays most people promote their podcasts through social media. Our promotion methods at BGSU? Hanging flyers around campus. 10 years, a lot has changed.
So to Andy Barch, Brian George and Erik Bell and everyone else affiliated with BGRSO and BGSU, thank you for 4.5 years of a lot of fun. Those 10 years sure did fly by!
Roll along you BG Warriors!
