WNR: 4 Times the Fun

Well, that sucked. While watching Sunday’s Wild Card loss to the Indianapolis Colts, there was an odd sense of calm in my house. A feeling of, been there done that. Honestly I did not even get upset while watching the game. Each time there was an incomplete pass I just simply took a deep breath and shrugged my shoulders. I would think to myself, yep, this is all too familiar. Big picture, Marvin Lewis has taken this team to 4 straight postseasons. That is a great. I’m just starting to wonder if that’s as far as he can take this team. What say you? On to the show.

In this week’s show:

Anthony, Scott, Mickey and I give our best and worst from Sunday’s loss to the Colts.

Should Marvin Lewis be retained as head coach? Is there someone available right now in the “coaching circles” that you know for a fact would do better than Lewis has? What if he leaves and the team reverts back to 90’s Bengals? Yikes.

The four of us are playing Playoff Survivor. You get to pick one team to win this weekend. Who ya got?

We wrap up the show this week with the usual shoutouts!

Would you like the chance to win this free Inside the Jungle t-shirt? Well you can enter by simply filling out this audience survey at spnt.tv/survey. Inside the Jungle – Episode 155 – Training Camp Eve

If you’re listening to this, chances are it’s Thursday which means the Bengals have officially kicked off their 2014 Training Camp! The day has finally come! What are you most excited about for 2014’s campaign? Which Bengals are you most looking forward to seeing on the field again in the Queen City? What are your expectations for this season? We want your feedback! Let us know!

In this week’s show:

We start off the show by choosing the one player we’re keeping a close eye on this Training Camp. If you had to pick one player, roster battle, or undrafted free agent, which player are you keeping your eye on this Training Camp? We each revealed our answers during the show.

Who is this owner and what did you do with him? Mike Brown had some pretty candid remarks this week, particularly regarding his role in the day-to-day with the club. Are you surprised? Is this confirmation of what you have suspected over the past few years? What is Mike Brown’s legacy?

Camp hasn’t even started yet and guys are already injured. Jermaine Gresham and Mike Pollak are on the Active PUP list at the moment. How worried are you about injuries?

Mike Brown also was candid this week regarding the contract negotiations with Andy Dalton, pretty much letting the public know that the ball was in Dalton’s court. It is rumored that the contract being offered to Dalton is similar in range to Colin Kaepernick’s deal in San Francisco. Should Dalton sign this deal? Should he bet on himself and wait?

Inside the Jungle – Episode 154 – Can You Run with this Line?

We’re just a few days away from Training Camp. Are you getting psyched? Real, and I mean REAL football is just days away. I never thought I could be more excited for preseason games than I am this year. Is something wrong with me?

In this week’s show:

We start off the show discussing the offensive line and the question that must be asked: Can you run with this line? The Bengals were ranked 28th in rushing a year ago. Was this due to the scheme? The playcalling? The play of the offensive line? The running backs? The lack of a fullback? Orson Charles? What do you think?

Another email we got this week asked us about George Iloka. Though not flashy, he seems to do just do his job and do it well. As Scott said during the show “I can’t recall a time last year where I cursed at the TV for a mistake made by Iloka.” Maybe that’s a good thing? I can’t recall any bonehead plays or missed tackles. Can we upgrade at that safety position or are you satisfied with what you have in Iloka?

With LeBron James returning to Cleveland on Friday, we thought it would be cool to ask which former Bengals would you be ok with welcoming back to play? Corey Dillon? Carl Pickens? Could you forgive Carson Palmer ever? Justin Smith? Jonathan Joseph?

That topic spawned a discussion on the best athletes to ever come from the State of Ohio. The Top 3 list that we came up with was 1. Cy Young 2. Jack Nicklaus 3. LeBron James. We know we left out some pretty big ones, Pete Rose, Ken Griffey, Jr. So, what say you? Who’s the best athlete to come from the state of Ohio?

Inside the Jungle – Episode 152 – The Brat is Back!

Happy 4th of July everyone! I know it’s a few days early but I hope everyone has a happy and safe holiday! On this week’s show we discuss the re-hiring of Bob Bratkowski by the Bengals. We also dig deeper into the QB rankings that ESPN released this week.

In this week’s show:

In case you’ve missed it, which is entirely possible since this wasn’t news announced by the Bengals, but Bob Bratkowski is now a coaching consultant with the team. In case you’re wondering if it’s THAT Bob Bratkowski, well, you’re right. It’s THAT one. Relax though. He’s not calling plays, he’s more of a special assistant to Marvin Lewis.

We also discuss the quarterback rankings that were announced by ESPN this week. The Red Rifle, who became a first time father this week (congrats!), was ranked 19th in the NFL. Is that too high? Too low? Just right? What say you?

We ended the night with some great callers, John from Kentucky made his triumphant return to the Jungle Line, Greg from Cincy, Guttersnake, and Fatal Content asked this Question of the Night: What gives you the most optimism heading into 2014? What is the biggest obstacle to the Bengals winning the 2014 AFC North Division? There was one resounding answer to the last question. What do you think it was?

Inside the Jungle – Episode 145 – Recapping the 2014 Draft

Well now that months, and months, and months of waiting for the Draft has finally ended, how do you feel the Bengals did this year? I’ve seen positive reviews all over the place from some of the national pundits. I’ve seen some pretty scathing reviews of this year’s draft as well. I was one of those fans who went off the deep on the final day of the draft. It was right about the time the Kansas City Chiefs foolishly took Aaron Murray, one spot before the Bengals were on the clock. Ha. The Chiefs are going to regret that pick someday. What were they thinking!? I made no secret over the past few weeks on the show that I’d like to see the Bengals select Murray. At least we got the quarterback who’s beaten him a few times in the SEC. How many other teams can say their 3rd string quarterback has 2 BCS Championship rings?

In this week’s show:

We welcome Timm Bates back to the program this week and the 4 of us discuss Darqueze Dennard, the Bengals first round pick in 2014. With the selection of Dennard, the Bengals now have 5 first round picks at Cornerback. Solid.

We welcomed in Paul Dehner from the Cincinnati Enquirer to discuss the QB situation, the Draft and CFA’s the Bengals signed and more. Paul’s the man and his coverage of the Bengals at the Enquirer is top notch.

The Jungle Line was buzzing tonight, lots of calls and fans with questions about the draft and their take on how the Bengals did this past weekend.

We gave out our usual shoutouts and read an awesome email from Cathal in Dublin, Ireland!

Inside the Jungle – Episode 144 – NFL Draft Eve

Congrats Bengals fans! You’ve made it! The day has finally come! The NFL Draft will kickoff later today in New York City and the Bengals will be picking 24th. So many variables and possibilities are running through my head. Do they take a cornerback? Do they take a defensive tackle? An offensive tackle? A WR, or RB? Will one of the big name quarterbacks slip to them at 24, should they trade up to get Johnny Manziel if he’s available? We’ll all find out later tonight!

In this week’s show:

Anthony and I discuss some of the positions at play for the Bengals at 24.

I quiz Anthony on some NFL Draft Trivia and the dude didn’t disappoint.

Richard called in and asked who we attributed the most recent success in the NFL Draft to. Is it Coach Lewis? Mike Brown? Katie Blackburn? Scouting Department?

We gave out our usual shoutouts. This week we shouted out Beth who tuned in to her first live show and Dan who sent an awesome email from England.

After the show wrapped we had a blast on the “After Party” as we continued to discuss the draft and our plans for our live show Thursday night. Did you miss the live show? Inside the Jungle – Episode 141 – Cornering the Draft

We are now 3 weeks away from the biggest night in the NFL offseason, the NFL Draft! How many mock drafts have you read? How many of them do you believe? Will the Bengals take a CB in the first round? How much faith do you put in the Bengals knocking another draft out of the park? They seemed to have really done well with this process the last few years (knock on wood). Let’s hope this trend continues in 2014.

In this week’s show:

We discussed the late date of the NFL Draft. Usually around this time we’re in prime draft mode but this year its different. Do you like the late draft date? Who do you think it favors more? The teams? The players?

We take a look at the offseason schedule over the next 3 months leading up to the first Training Camp practice on July 23rd.

We take some fantastic phone calls from Greg, John from Kentucky, Chris from Dayton and Guttersnake. We love hearing from you, so don’t be shy! Join us for a live show and have your voice heard.

We continue our Position Breakdown Series by looking at season that the CB’s had in 2013. Most of the focus was on Dre Kirkpatrick and his “bust” designation. Is this fair? Is he a bust? Chris from Dayton says he’ll eat his left Timberland boot if Dre has 6 INT’s this fall. I’d love to see it!

The Who-Dey Weekly Podcast – Episode 139 – That’s Tight

This week the owners met in Orlando, FL to discuss some of the rules changes at the Owners Meetings. Mike Brown, who rarely gives media interviews these days, had some pretty interesting comments regarding the franchise and the state of their quarterback. If you’re reading between the lines, it sounds as though the Bengals are eager to get an extension done with the Red Rifle but the Dalton camp are feeling like their quarterback may be undervalued by the Bengals. That’s pure speculation of course but from the information we do have, Marvin Lewis has staked his claim to Dalton being HIS guy from here on out. Their futures seem to be tied together at the moment.

In this week’s show:

We discussed the news that the Bengals have held off signings some of their bigger free agent players and let them walk due to the uncertainty of the salary cap and the contract talks with Andy Dalton. They want to get a deal done before the season, but should they? We weigh in.

We also look at some of the other news around PBS this week, Domata Peka has reached an agreement on an extension and some of the other free agent activity (or lack of) surrounding the club.

We took a closer look at the Tight End group in 2013. When looking at the statistical analysis of the two main tight ends, Jermaine Gresham and Tyler Eifert had almost the same exact season. Gresham had 46 catches (a career low) for 458 yards (career low) and 4 TD’s (tied for a career low). Eifert in his rookie season had 39 catches for 445 yards and 2 TD’s. When polled, Bengals fans tend to feel that in 2014, Tyler Eifert will have a bigger impact than Jermaine Gresham, to the tune of 65%.

The Who-Dey Weekly Podcast – Episode 134 – Committee of Running Backs

There has been a lot of talk over the past few weeks about some potential free agent running backs that will be on the market. We can all dream right? The two running backs for the Bengals in 2013 had an OK season. The Lawfirm and Giovani Bernard combined for 1,451 yards in 2013 but the sense amongst Bengals fans is that the running game struggled for most of the year. Should the Bengals look to upgrade this position in 2014? Are you comfortable with giving more of the workload to Bernard? Should the Bengals look to the draft for a bruiser like Carlos Hyde or a speed demon like De’Anthony Thomas?

In this week’s show:

We start by taking a look at the year that was for the Bengals running backs in 2013. Did you know Benjarvus Green-Ellis actually increased his TD total from 2012? He rushed the ball nearly 300 yards less on 50 less carries though.

Fatal Content, one of the biggest fans of the show, calls in with his Question of the Night: “Do you guys think that in your heart of hearts Margus Hunt can rightfully replace Michael Johnson? And if he went to another team and tore it up would you guys then regret not re-signing him?” What are your thoughts? Comment below!

What is the role and future of Rex Burkhead?

We got an email from Mike Smith, one of our podcast fans from across the pond asking about the NFL putting a franchise in London.

We wrapped the episode with a phone call from Kurt talking about some of the big name free agents on the market and a few of the running backs in this year’s draft class. Which running back (free agent or draft) would you most like to see in a Bengals uniform in 2014?

The Who-Dey Weekly Podcast – Episode 131 – Top 3 Position Groups Needing Upgrades

It’s getting tougher and tougher for me to watch the Super Bowl coverage this week knowing the Bengals had a team that could have been playing on Sunday. Instead I’ll be watching from my couch, chowing down on some chips and dip. I used to have a Super Bowl ritual. I’d go to the store on Saturday, find me the thickest steak I could buy and on Sunday I’d broil it up for the big game. I think the last Super Bowl I did that for was Super Bowl XLIII Steelers vs Cardinals back in 2009. Maybe my tradition died when Santonio Holmes supposedly got two feet down in the endzone. I’m still not convinced. I’m thinking though that now that my kids are 5, maybe it’s time to start that tradition back up again. Do you have any Super Bowl watching traditions? Do you go to the same party each year? Hang out with the same group of friends? Anyone else think Monday should be a National Holiday?

In this week’s show:

This week we lead off the show talking about the highly anticipated Pro Bowl. Did you know they played the Pro Bowl already?

We discussed the new format and how it pitted teammates like Vontaze Burfict and AJ Green against one another. You think AJ was afraid to go across the middle?

We discuss our 2013 Season Awards which you can personally vote on here.

Anthony, Mickey, Timm and I gave our lists for our Top 3 position groups that need upgrading in the offseason either through Free Agency or the draft. If you had to rank the top 3 where would you go? Comment below.

Last but not least we talk a little bit about the Super Bowl and give our score predictions.

The Who-Dey Weekly Podcast – Episode 128 – The Blame Game

Wow, that stunk. Let the offseason commence. This time there were no excuses, no blown out knees for our quarterback, no facing the team in back to back weeks, no playing a team on the road in a dome. No this one showed us a lot. It showed us that Marvin Lewis can’t get it done in the BIG games, playoffs or not. A lot of the blame for this Sunday’s game will be thrown at the feet of Andy Dalton, and probably rightly so. He turned the ball over and played like he forgot how to play football. It wasn’t Dalton’s fault that Giovani Bernard fumbled the ball in the red zone. It wasn’t Andy Dalton’s fault AJ Green dropped a pass at the 5 yard line to set them up for a score. Last I checked I didn’t see Andy Dalton lining up at defensive tackle to help try and stop the run. No, it’s a team game, coaches included. The lack of adjustments and the lack of a clutch or killer instinct with this team is missing. I don’t know if the head ball coach has the ability to bring out this trait in this team. 0-5 certainly helps me make my case.

In this week’s show:

This week we lead off the show talking about the Bengals 2nd half meltdown versus the San Diego Chargers.

We debate on the coaching staff, is it time for a change?

How much blame should Andy Dalton shoulder?

This team lacks the clutch gene. We discuss the unlikelihood of Johnny Manziel in Bengal stripes. Nice to dream though.

Could a backup quarterback like Mark Sanchez help Andy Dalton?

We took a lot of calls from some angry passionate Bengals fans who had a lot to get off their chest.

The Who-Dey Weekly Podcast – Episode 124 – Grading the Offensive Line

The stage is set, a huge AFC match up this Sunday at Paul Brown Stadium as the Bengals play host to the AFC South leaders the Indianapolis Colts. On this week’s show we discussed the Colts and how their 8-4 season doesn’t seem all that great when you look at the numbers. It’s easy to go 8-4 when you’re in a division with the Texans, the Titans, and the Jaguars. Home losses to St. Louis (a 30 point loss I might add) and on the road in Arizona (ugly), I’m not sure what to make of this team. Either way the game on Sunday will be a cold one as it sounds like SNOW is in the forecast. Bundle up Bengals fans!

In this week’s show:

This week we lead off the show talking about the Bengals win over the Chargers.

Andy Dalton wasn’t great, he wasn’t bad, he was OK Andy, which usually means the Bengals are in good shape.

The offensive line injuries are beginning to pile up with Clint Boling going on season ending IR. Welcome back Dennis Roland!

We’re joined this week by Pro Football Focus and CincyJungle.com contributor Jake Liscow who has graded the Bengals offensive line all season. You’d be surprised to hear where they rank among the other teams in the NFL. You can also find him on Twitter @jake_nfl.

We talk a little bit about Anthony’s visit to San Diego over the weekend. He has some great photos and an awesome write up about his visit. You can read Part One here and then Part 2 here!

The Who-Dey Weekly Podcast – Episode 107 – Hard Knocks Review

What a way to kickoff this season of Hard Knocks. Episode 1 had its season premiere Tuesday night and it certainly didn’t disappoint. One thing you know you’re going to get every year is quality. NFL Films does it better than anyone else, period. The music, the footage, the slo-mo shots, the beautiful shots of the Cincinnati skyline. The shot opening up the show from below the train that elevates till you can see over the train on the bridge down into the Paul Brown Stadium practice fields was awesome. That bridge is awfully high and I wonder how they were able to shoot that scene. The show gave us an in depth look on the Bengals coaching staff and to see them be so candid was very refreshing.

In this week’s show:

Anthony, Mickey and I breakdown episode one of Hard Knocks.

We discuss just how much the injuries played a part in this first episode.

James Harrison is a bad dude!

Hue Jackson is a fiery guy and this episode was a great example of how much Hue’s attitude is appreciated.

The two rookies Gio Bernard and Tyler Eifert and their roles on this team.

We continued with our Stay or Go segment discussing which Running backs and Quarterbacks will make the final roster.

We wrap things up bringing back a blast from the past, a game we used to play on the show “Name that Bengal”.

Don’t forget to tune in to our Pregame and Postgame Coverage before and after the Bengals preseason opener against the Atlanta Falcons Thursday night! Join us at cincyjungle.com/live.

The Who-Dey Weekly Podcast – Episode 105 – Training Camp Begins

The long offseason is FINALLY over as Training Camp 2013 kicks off Thursday at Paul Brown Stadium. It doesn’t feel like it was all that long ago the Bengals were walking off the field in Houston. Now its year three of the Gruden, Dalton, Green era, will this offense take the next step in 2013? Will the linebackers take the next step this season with the addition of James Harrison and the return of Rey Mauluga? Which wide receiver on this team will take grab of the #2 spot and run with it? All answers we’re seeking here in the next few weeks as Training Camp progresses toward the first preseason game 15 days from now.

In this week’s show:

We welcome Mr. Whodeyfans back with open arms though Mickey did have to skip his softball game tonight. We discuss Mike Brown’s comments this week regarding the selection of “risky” players.

We take a look at the biggest roster news coming from Paul Brown Stadium this week, particularly the release of guard Travelle Wharton and Andre Smith’s inclusion on the NFI/PUP list to start camp.

We receive a voicemail from one of our biggest fans across the pond asking about Dre Kirkpatrick.

We’re joined by the play-by-play voice of the Bengals Radio Network, Dan Hoard, where he fills us in on life as a broadcaster. Dan is one of the best in the business and he does a great job calling games on the radio for the Bengals. He tells us how he spends his offseason, what kind of preparation he does each week and the differences and difficulties calling games on both the College and NFL levels.

We wrap things up with our All Time Offense Post Super Bowl where Mickey and I debate who should be the choice at quarterback, Dalton or Palmer.

The Who-Dey Weekly Podcast – Episode 101 – It’s a Hard Knock Life

Not that our podcast isn’t a great one this week, its just got a tough act to follow. Last week Mickey was at Paul Brown Stadium, this week? His basement. Not that there is anything wrong with that. The Who-Dey Weekly Podcast – Episode 93 – Run the Ball

That one may come back to haunt the Bengals. Up 19-10 in the 4th quarter at home to a team riddled with injuries and emotionally spent. A team with one of the worst run defenses in the league yet the Bengals abandoned the run game. Dropped catches, dropped INT’s, missed tackles, ugh it was just not the Bengals day Sunday. Even worse was that Pittsburgh and Baltimore both lost. Time to strap it up men, at Philly, at Pittsburgh and home to Baltimore. The playoffs for the Cincinnati Bengals have already started. This week we’re joined by co-host of the Irish Impact podcast Kevin Wernert who is a lifelong Eagles fan to help us break down Thursday night’s primetime affair.

In this week’s show:

How do you blow that game?

Abandoned the running game despite having the lead and a RB averaging 7.4 per carry

Missed opportunities

John, Jeremy and FatalContent from Twitter gave us a ring on the Who-Dey Line

Shoutouts/Announcements – Shop till you Drop!

The Who-Dey Weekly Podcast – Episode 88 – One Mo Time

Well at least the Bengals were competitive in this one. For a while there it didn’t look great. After the 105 yard kickoff return to start the second half you start to wonder if this team will EVER get it together. Then they reel off 14 points to take the lead. Peyton Manning and the Broncos were on the ropes! This was their chance, and they let it slip away. Also, don’t forget to keep voting for this year’s Podcast Awards!

The Who-Dey Weekly Podcast – Episode 77 – Reggie Kelly Interview

We welcome Mr. Number 1 Fan back to the program this week after spending a week with his family at the beach. Mickey was excited because despite being 12 hours from Cincinnati, he was still able to watch BOTH Bengals preseason games AND still catch the Reds vs the Cubs on WGN. The Bengals did get win number 2 of the preseason and the first team offense was finally able to muster up a touchdown vs the Falcons. Here’s to hoping that the Bengals can avoid the injury bug yet again this week as they host the Packers on Thursday night at PBS.

In this week’s show:

We look back at the Bengals win in Atlanta

Andy Dalton says “I’ve got plenty where that came from to his critics” on his bomb to AJ Green

Injuries plagued the Bengals win again, this time it was Burfict concussed by Taylor Mays, Gresham landing awkwardly while being tackled

Shoutouts/Announcments

We are visited by former Bengals tight end Reggie Kelly who fills us in on what he’s got going on with his career and some of his plans for after football.
